I hear where you are coming from, and maybe a few fans care, but I think you missed my point a little bit. I also am willing to bet that the % of fans that care that it was recorded to take has less that statistically significant effect on sales.

I don't think "the consumer of music does not care about how you made the music" is completely true. Image and identity is part and parcel for all entertainers. Press releases often talk about the way a record was made. Think about the White Stripes advertising that their records are recorded to tape. Think about Bon Iver's first album being "recorded in a snow-bound log cabin".

Technology always allows people to do more with less. James Cameron made the Titanic and wee people on the deck because he could. Can we tell it's fake? Sure, but it still was a smash hit. I know people who refuse to use an Ipod because of the loss of sound quality, but it's better than jogging with a CD player.

We're now watching movies on smart phones because we're stuck on an airplane for 6 hour. Why? Because we can. We have more choice about what we want when we want it.

I have old modeling stuff (Line 6 Spider II) but I am eyeing the Roland VG-99. Just amazing stuff and it will fit in my closet. And it's been around enough I can get it off ebay for less.

The Music business fought the digitizing of music until Apple (Jobs) had the business savvy and negotiation skills to bring various record labels to iTunes Store and then they started making money from it (although piracy still runs rampant).

Those who don't embrace technology are doomed to be left behind. Engineers aren't going to go away - they will still be needed but they need to be up on the latest technology. And if they don't need that old Fender Twin Reverb anymore, they can sell it on Ebay. Someone will want it.

Great article! I agree with pretty much everything you wrote, and the level-headed objectivity about modeling is something you don't often see on the Internet. What's depressing is that a studio owner (quoted at the end of your article) sees the power of young musicians making music easily as a threat, and not a beautiful thing. That's sad, and it's indicative of a dying, dinosaur breed that with that attitude don't even deserve to be saved.
